As we lay ignorant
Covering our eyes with our hats
As we bow down with both eyes open
We walked watching our steps
But failed to see what's beyond.
Terrorism. Global warming. Extremism. Hedonism. Truly, these are the many issues that we come face to face everyday in this age beyond the 20th century. The 21st... So have we really progressed forward as the most intelligent sentient being that walked this planet or have we just started the ball rolling towards a crisis that we can never really recover from? The beginning of the end.
We can have many theories, different sets of explanations of why the mentioned happened, say for example, why people turn to terrorism, why people so readily engage in the use of force to exert their influence... because the person or society is the uneducated or that the economic reality of today needs the harsh capitalistic structure to enable the survival of an economy to feed the population that endlessly expands.
Those explanations to a very large extent are just grazing the surface of these issues of the "new age", in my opinion. There in fact, lies a more fundamental reason that maybe we rather not talk about or even unaware of in the first place. Or just plain denial - We may even deny it as a root cause because of the fact that it is a fundamental attribute of the human psyche, the thing that defines us as humans, desire. The latently sweetest poison we all have. The thing that enables us to work towards progress or succumb to the pits that it holds.
Desire. It transcends all explanations as to why we have, as a human race, reached a world of today, of this day and age. A world, full of progress but tittering on the edge of irreversible disaster in which there then only lies one way, down.
Desire drives the human economy. We all yearn for the high life, the comfort, the abundance of wealth, our own importance, that might and power that money holds, yet, we were too blind to see the people way below the chain of the capitalistic world economy. Who cares, they say, meritocracy... Its about your own effort, our own rights. If they cant succeed, its their fault, not ours... and these people who lavishes in the riches of the world still believe in "life is unfair" without even blinking and realizing that maybe, those at the bottom have been in the zone of the unfair life which they can never get out from.
And thus the economies of the world, working together with the political
owners of that day sat on a round table, wanting their own space for themselves, facing each other, challenging who can be the keeper of the Excalibur, the mightiest or rise to be on par with the successful ones or struggle to keep pace with the trends at the table without even knowing what is going on. They all know that they have to survive. They want to survive! and if the figurines of their table are not happy in their own spaces, they know that they cant survive... I have to do what it takes, we need to make them happy, feed them, let them live the lifestyle they want, the good food, ever present air conditioning, electricity, the life, titles, positions, honour... feed them all these! Yes! We need to! Whatever it takes... We need to change in the everchanging economy, the globalised world... We are competing in a globalised world... we need to stay competitive to survive... change... Be creative!
And little did they realised on that round table, with everyone at their own little spaces, fighting for the survival of the presence of their imposing boundary that commands exclusivity in membership, that the table cannot hold the weight of the desires at work, tittering on the edge of disaster that can consume them all, still they work tirelessly to compete againts one another, to have more figurines on their own spaces on the tables so that they can survive, like how one gathers the largest army on that tiny space of board in a game of Risk. So they see pieces of the table falling and they wonder if they should stop but no! I cant! Its too risky! My presence is at stake here! I may not be present at the face of this table should I cared too much... and thus everyone followed... with the political owners at the helm... desire...
We then see a gathering, proclaiming their are the most righteous. We then see a group, claiming they are with truth. We then see a fellowship, justifying their own presence. And that is all they see and want to hear, without heeding the others around. It is only I. We are the only ones. They did nothing to help one another through times of need. They sow the seeds of hatred. They ridiculed one another. They blame each other. They blamed the others. They blame the world that the others have brought about. They blamed everything... but not themselves... You are not right. I am! They turned blind to the pressing needs of the overarching problems of the day but were caught up in stamping their presence, if need to, by force. You are not right. I am. Boom! They failed to see how little progress they made with all the divine knowledge given to them in a book, even with the security of the progeny. You are not right. I am. And that is all they see. Where lies compassion. Where lies compromise. Where lies true passion for what is true, spread in the most dignified way... desire...
We are at the edge
Of space,
along the fine line where
a single push can bring us down
and a single pull can bring us back together...
The complexity of the human race beckons
Where once stood the glaring opposities
So easily distinguished
Have been hidden so carefully, unwittingly
We need to find our answers
To our problems
Where the root cause
Lies deep in our hearts
Hardened over the centuries
Think...
For we all are at stake
And then on, understand
That we all need to understand each other
And then those who honours others well with the fullest of dignity
Will command the most influence
And save all from the impending disaster
Created by a little thing called
desire...
May He grant glory upon us to guide us to the best of actions...
Covering our eyes with our hats
As we bow down with both eyes open
We walked watching our steps
But failed to see what's beyond.
